For servers, cloud drives and two panes, look at ForkLift or Commander One. For a more configurable Finder, try QSpace or Path Finder. For precise search, HoudahSpot. For seeing and finding files by description, plus a Shelf and clipboard history, FileShelf. All run alongside Finder, so you can try one without giving anything up.

If you work with servers and cloud drives
ForkLift 4
Binary Nights describes ForkLift as a dual-pane file manager and file transfer client. It connects to SFTP, FTP, WebDAV and Amazon S3, plus services like Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox. Its Sync feature compares local or remote folders and syncs them one way or both ways.
Price model: a lifetime license with a set period of free updates. Single user: $19.95 with 1 year of updates, or $34.95 with 2 years. Family (all Macs in one household): $29.95 or $49.95. Small Business (up to 5 Macs): $69.95 or $119.95. When the update period ends, you keep the version you have. A free trial download is offered.
Version and macOS: 4.7.6, released Sep 29, 2026. ForkLift 4.4 and later need macOS 14.6 or later.
Suits you if you move files to servers or cloud storage often and want it all in one window.
Commander One
Commander One uses a classic dual-pane layout. It connects to FTP, SFTP and WebDAV servers, and to Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Backblaze B2. It handles ZIP, RAR, 7Z and TAR archives, and can edit files inside an archive without unpacking it.
Price model: a one-time payment. Personal license (1 Mac): $29.99. Team license (5 Macs): $99.99. Larger company licenses are by quote. The vendor notes that the Mac App Store version has some limits compared with the PRO version sold on its website.
Version and macOS: 3.18, dated Sep 25, 2026. Requires macOS 10.13 or later.
Suits you if you want two panes, broad cloud support and deep archive handling, or you're on an older version of macOS.
If you want a more configurable Finder
QSpace
QSpace calls itself a more flexible Finder. It offers 12 pane layouts for comparing, copying and moving files in one window, an address bar with auto-completion, one-click file hashes, and quick links to open a folder in Terminal or an editor. Extra abilities come as extensions: Stash Shelf, Advanced Batch Rename and Server Connections are listed at $0.99 each, and Enhanced Archiver is free.
Price model: one-time (“Purchase Once, Use Forever”). The pricing page lists QSpace Pro at $29.99 and the Mac App Store edition at $27.99; a sale price was also shown when we checked. One account works on up to two devices at once. The Pro version has a 30-day free trial; the App Store edition has no trial.
Version and macOS: the current download is version 7.0.4. Supports macOS 10.15 or later, on Intel and Apple silicon.
Suits you if you like to tune your layout and pay only for the extras you use.
Path Finder
Cocoatech describes Path Finder simply as a file manager for macOS. Its own guides cover list and icon views, built-in search by name or contents, compressing files, and connecting to remote servers.
Price model: licenses that cover a set period. Cocoatech's shop lists a 1-year license at $32.95, a 2-year license at $55.95 and a 5-year license at $122.95.
Version and macOS: the vendor's update log lists version 26.1.9. We could not find a current minimum macOS version on Cocoatech's pages, so check before you buy.
Suits you if you want a Finder-style file manager with extra tools and are comfortable with a time-based license.
If your problem is search
HoudahSpot
HoudahSpot is a file search app built on Spotlight's index. You combine criteria such as name, text, extension, tags, dates, size and author, and group them to match any, all or none. Searches can cover several locations, and you can save them as templates. Results can be checked in an Info pane, Quick Look or a text preview that shows the words around each match.
Price model: a license covers a major version, so a HoudahSpot 6 license covers all 6.x releases. A Single-User License is for one named user on unlimited computers. Upgrades to version 6 are $24 (single user) or $39 (family). New-license prices load at checkout and vary by region, so we haven't listed them. A free trial is offered.
Version and macOS: HoudahSpot 6.8 requires macOS 10.14 Mojave or newer with Spotlight indexing turned on.
Suits you if you know exactly what you're looking for and want fine control over how you search.
If you want to see and find files, not manage them
FileShelf
FileShelf is our app, so weigh this section with that in mind. It isn't a Finder replacement. It indexes folders you choose and shows them as big previews, sorted by kind. You search in plain words, like “pdfs from last week”, and the type, date and size become filters you can remove. It also has a Shelf for carrying files between apps, Clipboard History on ⌃⌥V, and Clean Up for forgotten downloads, old screenshots and installers. Everything is indexed on your Mac.
Price model: 7 days free. After that, browsing, search and previews stay free. Shelves, Clipboard History and Actions need a one-time license: $9, $19 or $29 for 1, 3 or 5 Macs for the first 200 customers, then $29, $49 or $69. No subscription. Direct download, notarized by Apple, not on the Mac App Store.
macOS: macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel.
Suits you if you lose files more than you manage them. If you need two panes, server connections or batch renaming, pick one of the apps above.
Or stay with Finder
Finder already has tags, Quick Look, Smart Folders and Spotlight. If those cover your day, you may not need anything else. Our FileShelf vs Finder page goes through what Finder does well.
